The Trend of the Century

By Andrew Mickey

“There’s no way. That’s impossible.” That’s all Bradford Parkinson heard from his superiors at the Department of Defense. Little did the dozens of foresightless bureaucrats realize that Parkinson would go on to disprove them all. And in the process, create a technological revolution investment that can’t be ignored.

You see, in 1957, the USSR won the first leg of the space race when it launched Sputnik into the earth’s middle atmosphere. The U.S. was close behind, but no one really knew what we could do with these giant electronic devices orbiting the planet. We just knew we had to have more up there than the Russians.

The race was on. The U.S. began launching satellites as fast as it could. By 1960, the government had even found a use for them. This was the first year the U.S. Navy had successfully used a satellite-based navigation system in its fleet.

That’s where Parkinson comes in. Parkinson, along with his partner Ivan Getting, saw the potential of this system and a wealth of different applications and founded the NAVSTAR program. NAVSTAR would eventually grow into the 24-satellite system we know as the Global Positioning System, or GPS.

But the whole time, Parkinson was told, “You can’t do it, there’s no way. It’s impossible.” Parkinson and Getting proved them all wrong. Now, after proving everyone else wrong, those two have been enshrined in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, the GPS is slowly changing the world.

GPS is becoming bigger than the cell phone or iPod. The numbers are staggering. But I’ll get to them in a moment. First, let’s get back to the bureaucrats.

As you can imagine, the U.S. government wanted to keep this technology under wraps and out of the hands of its enemies. It created a complex computer system to give all non-military GPS a deliberately wide margin of error. The system added a mistake to each calculation to ensure that each private GPS reading was incorrect between 10–150 yards.

The encryption was impossible to break. When I was completing my initial technical training in the Air Force, our GPS was very antiquated. On top of the 2-pound GPS transceiver, the decryption device was the size of a man’s fist. However, by adding that small box to the transceiver, we were able to know exactly where we were within a yard.

Without exacting precision, of course, a GPS is of very limited value. In fact, it’s downright useless. Imagine your car with a fancy new GPS informing you to turn right somewhere between 10 yards or 150 yards because it’s not really sure. Before the error was removed, GPS found very limited application in the civilian sector. It was used on a large commercial scale only in the trucking industry because managers only really need to know the general location of individual trucks within their fleet. And GPS proved its worth in the industry.

The consumer GPS market only took off in 2000 when President Clinton officially removed the installed error in GPS measurements. If it weren’t for this move, we’d still see very limited use of GPS. And there’s no way it would be found in cell phones and other small electronic devices.

No doubt: GPS is a great invention with far-reaching implications. Thankfully, from an investor’s perspective, we’re still in the very early stages. You might have a GPS receiver in your car. Or you might have one on your boat or a portable one for hiking, but that’s all niche segments of the much bigger market.

After years of waiting, GPS is finally poised to cross over into the much larger-scale markets. Pretty soon, you’ll see it in every laptop, PDA, cell phone, and digital music player. Obviously, the number of GPS units out there is going to soar into the billions.

With GPS growing so fast, there are going to be a lot of winners created. However, we don’t know who will be the ultimate big winner. Will it be Garmin, TomTom, Navico or the dozens of other GPS equipment makers in the market? Most of them will do fairly well, but it’s best to buy the companies that make the products they use.

But the important thing to remember is to not fall into the trap of thinking the GPS boom isn’t going to happen… it is. If you don’t believe me, just ask Bradford Parkinson. Or better yet, tell him it’ll never work
