Environmental Technologies: Thank goodness for easy solutions
by J. Christoph Amberger
The road to heck, they say, is paved with good intentions. Last month, manufacturing activity in China, for example, expanded at the slowest pace in four months -- as Beijing clamped down on polluting and energy-intensive industries.
About time, I thought as I was stuffing the kids’ camp clothes into the dryer. But I couldn’t pursue the thought. Something seemed different about the basement.
Was there something wrong with my eyes? Were my cataracts getting worse?
What a relief! A light bulb had burned out. A green one, no less: Twisted in nifty coils. Environmentally and politically correct. Socially responsible even. My children can march back to school in late August, singing happy earth songs, and basking in the saintly knowledge that their home’s basement is bathed in alternative lighting (although I admit that, for the life of me, I was unable to calculate if it had really dispensed the publicized 10,000 hours of warm, fuzzy light).
As I unscrewed the bulb, I noticed letters on the white plastic body of the bulb. I had to squint (darn cataracts!): “Contains Mercury,” it said in letters smaller than those used by dear publisher colleagues running disclaimer boxes in “sponsored” stock promotion mailings. I was also able to make out the words "Dispose according to local, state and federal law."
Wait a sec!
Mercury? In my green, Al Gore-approved light bulb? My environmentalist breakthrough? My contribution to stop the climate catastrophe?
Tell me that ain't so! I get lectured on the increase in mercury levels in fish since the beginning of the Bush administration -- every time a dear colleague of mine has a tuna salad sandwich for lunch. Now, if I were to just drop the thing into the garbage can (whose foot-operated lid had already snapped back to take it in), I might be contributing to the great tuna salad crisis of the future.
And what did they mean by their cryptic reference to "local, state, and federal law"? The law that governs the removal of manufacturers' tags from mattresses?
I placed the bulb on my kitchen counter. Deferring a decision is always good. Will I be researching local, state and federal disposal laws governing my socially conscious mercury bulbs? Will I just chuck them in the trash, continue my environmental epiphany, and 10 years from now loudly blame the then long-gone Bush administration for the mercury in the tuna salad?
I believe the latter version requires the least thought and, hence, will be the preferred mode of the environmentally enlightened.
Thank providence for easy solutions!
